In 2004, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging provided a grant to the Pennsylvania Adult Day Services Association (PADSA) to develop a training program for adult day service employees. PADSA developed the training to cover the four topics mandated by the OADLC state license that are to be reviewed every year:
- Service needs by diagnosis
- Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia,
- Stroke,
- Developmental Delay (now referred to as Intellectual Disability), and
- Dual Diagnosis
- Behavior Management and Positive Approaches
- Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation
- Transfer Techniques and Body Mechanics
As part of the grant in 2004, each adult day center received a copy of the training video package for free. The training package includes the video, post-test and answer key for each section. This training has been available for purchase ever since.
The video is designed so that each topic can be watched separately from the others making it ideal for use at a staff meeting or for independent study. Each post-test provides the total continuing education time for both viewing the topic and for taking the test. The post-test forms may be freely copied for use in your agency.
OADLC Licensing Chief reviewed the video set and deemed it still appropriate for the purposes of training requirements for the OADLC licensing. PADSA recognizes that the term “developmental delay” is no longer the preferred language and hopes that during your staff training that a discussion can be held with staff to indicate the preferred language as the information presented is still relevant.
Currently OADLC Licensing is reviewing and revising Adult Day Services regulations. PADSA has made a decision at this time to wait until OADLC Licensing releases their new regulations before updating training and Policy and Procedure materials to allow for comprehensive revisions in language and regulatory requirements.
